Data rates for contemporary wireless technologies

As more mobile broadband networks are launched and accessible to a greater potential market of users, a common question I receive is how these protocols compare in speed. This first chart shows multiple contemporary protocols and their maximum claimed data rates.

Another example of data rate performance is this downlink time comparison that I made for a Maravedis article when the iPod touch handheld with Wi-Fi came out. The WiBro service is based on mobile WiMAX using the 802.16e-2005 protocol. A comparison to Wi-Fi (802.11b) and Bluetooth are included to show performance options, despite their significantly shorter ranges as LAN and PAN technologies.
