HGTV Landscape Smart: Wireless Outdoor Office

Monday, April 2nd, 2007 – 2:32 pm

There’s nothing like a garden setting to help clear your mind. So why not create a home office outside to take advantage of the relaxing environment? That’s just what these homeowners did with the help of landscape architect Dan Berger. Outdoor Wireless Office

Berger had already designed a garden for the homeowners–with lush plantings, a fish pond and waterfall–when the couple asked for one more element: an outdoor office where they could work while enjoying the new view. The office was designed to “disappear” when not in use so that the patio could also be used for entertaining guests.

The garden office that Berger ultimately planned features an arbor roof to shade the work area, a nearby storage cabinet for office supplies and a fold-down desk with a top layer of galvanized steel so that magnets can be used to prevent papers from blowing away.

We had a great time participating in this episode with the film crew, talent, and Dan’s Land Plan team. We made the outdoor office wireless by installing a wireless router to the home’s DSL modem and adding a wireless PC Card to the laptop. Jeff is holding a wireless analog modem during his interview (TV makes Jeff look a lot younger than he really is).

You can catch the steps to build this outdoor office along with a link to the episode on the HGTV website.
