Wireless Community Networks Forum @ WiNETS America - Closing Keynote: Creating A Wireless Digital City
Thursday, December 8th, 2005 – 11:49 amThis session focuses upon “Digital Cities†that interconnect public sector resources with private needs in highly cost-effective ways. An expert from Proxim Corp. (who serves also on the WiMAX Forum Board of Directors) will provide details from case histories about ways to connect the government entities within a county and/or city. As one example, a new metro area wireless network links all of Oceanside, CA’s major facilities, including City Hall, fire and police departments, and water and harbor facilities. This has saved the City approximately $150,000 per year, while enabling users across the network to access voice, data and video applications quickly and reliably. As another example, six counties in Pennsylvania have deployed a wireless broadband solution to improve communication among counties. The new wireless systems support data exchanges between counties covering more than 5,000 square miles. Mapping rural portions of the counties enables the systems to identify 911 callers’ locations, dramatically speeding emergency response times.
